Kelly Talbot shows compassion and courage beyond what is expected in her role as a nurse. Working tirelessly as a nurse and student nurse educator, Talbot believes that the female nursing force is undervalued, and is determined to improve the field for generations to come.
“Health inequality is a massive issue in Aotearoa. There are many dimensions of health inequalities, ethnicity being one of them. Research shows that Māori people are extremely disadvantaged compared to those that are non-Māori. I think it is important that the definition of equity is understood across all areas of the healthcare sector. When equity is understood health care professionals are able to work towards achieving equity in health outcomes. Inequalities in New Zealand is a huge passion of mine and I look forward to encouraging change and seeing the culture within my community and workplace transform.”
Kelly Talbot is a clinical nurse specialist at Southern Cross Hospital and student nurse educator at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, based in Rotorua. She shows compassion and courage beyond what is expected in her role as a nurse and has improved health outcomes for her patients through her commitment to evidence-based research, her quality improvement initiatives and her strong leadership skills. Talbot recently received the New Zealand Nurses Organisation’s Young Nurse of the Year Award earlier this year. Talbot believes that the female nursing force is undervalued, and is determined to improve the field for generations to come. She has received her Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science Advanced Nursing and has just completed her Masters in Nursing and is due to start her RN Designated Prescribing 2021
