Yahn Soaurchhorda is a certified nurse with more than five years of experience who is pioneering women’s health in Cambodia through a women’s health outreach service at Mercy Medical Center Cambodia. With cervical cancer being the second most prevalent cancer in women in Cambodia, Chhorda has supported WHO and the Cambodian national programme to increase cervical cancer screening and prevention.
Chhorda now works as a “trainer of trainers” for the national programme, which includes educating both physicians and midwives on the “see and treat” method that is practical and affordable. In addition, she provides community health education through various NGOs to enable more Cambodian women from grassroots communities to access prevention education and screening. Chhorda also educates staff from rescue NGOs on presumptive and syndromic treatment for STIs in high-risk populations and trafficked persons. Her straightforward teaching approach, her level of comfort with culturally difficult discussions, and her compassion for patients and staff make her a favorite among all of her peers.
